“My parents encouraged me to go into Music” Lagos Pastor Taiwo Odukoya’s son Jimmy reveals

Tall and handsome Jimmy Odukoya is the first son of popular Lagos Pastor Taiwo Odukoya of Fountain of life Church and late Pastor Bimbo Odukoya.The talented music star who stormed the entertainment industry in 2010 Is a Business and Training Consultant, Relationship Coach, Public speaker and also pastors at his father’s church.Popularly known as Pastor J, his interest in music was kindled by his upbringing in a musically inclined home as his parents were once choristers.In an interview with City People Vivian Onuorah, he spoke about his music , life as a pastor and how his parents influenced his career.
What kind of music do you do?

All kinds of music Inspirational ,Gospel ,Rap/ hip hop, Jazz hip hop fusion , afro beat, dancehall all kinds, I love music in general so I try as much as possible to explore different sounds

What inspired your interest in music?

I grew up in a musically inclined home. Both my parents( Pastor Taiwo and Bimbo Odukoya) grew up singing in the choir and have a love for music and dance so music was part of my childhood experience. My sisters and I grew up singing and dancing .

When and how did your music career start?

I officially began my music career in August 2010. I had watched a particular music video and I wasn’t too pleased with the message behind the song , so I decided there and then I was going to go into music and be the change I wanted to see. Told my sister (Tolu Odukoya-Ijogun )that this was what I wanted to do, and she introduced me to her producer, friend Mosa Adegboye and we recorded my first two singles and like they say the rest is history

How do you plan to stay strong in the very competitive music industry?

It’s about consistently, excellence, building relationships, hard work and funding. Every artist must ask themselves why they do music, if its about the fame and recognition, it would be so easy to get discouraged, but if its about passion and purpose, and love for music , its keeps you going .

How has your success been so far?

So far so good, I have won several awards and had numerous nominations, established key relationships, learnt a lot about the Nigerian music industry but nevertheless, we keep pushing for better.

How do you get inspiration for your tracks?

To be honest, I get inspired by the beat, I hear the song in the beat, the words, lyrics and message seem to flow once I hear the beat.

What music projects are you working on at the moment?

Just released a new single called “My Way” featuring Shaydee produced by spax, as a follow up to the last Single “Mr Wonder” produced by WizzyPro and directed by MR Moe Musa. Currently working on promotions and a possible video shoot

Asides music what else do you do?

Pastor at the Fountain of life church under Pastor Taiwo and Nomthi Odukoya as well as pastor Church 3:16, the youth arm of the Fountain of Life Church. During the week I am the Executive Director of FirstCall Institute for Innovation, Leadership and Management (F.I.I.L.M) an innovation and management training consulting firm. I also do public speaking and relationship coaching as well .

How do you juggle being a pastor and a musician?

Time management and planning. Pastoring is a full time job even when you are part time. I plan time out for the studio and appearances as need be.

Did your parents have any influence in your music interest?

Yes, like I already stated they both grew up singing and were both musically inclined.

Being a prominent pastors son, what impact has that had on your music career?

Well it has its positive side to it as alot of people extend goodwill and favour to me but there is also the automatic association or expectation of what people expect my music or videos to look or sound like but overall generally positive.

And do you have your parents support to do music?

I’ve been blessed with supportive parents. Both my dad and my mum of blessed memory always supported me in whatever I wanted to do. My father has been exceptional. He has always been a supporter of his family .

Do you have any mentors?

Definitely my number one mentor who has shaped the man that I have become and will continue to be has to my father Pastor Taiwo Odukoya. He is a great example of a Pastor, Husband, Father, Leader and Humanitarian.

Has doing music been financially rewarding for you?

Music in Nigeria is very capital intensive, you must invest in it before returns come; from Promotions to ,Videos it is a lot of money. We have invested, and continue to invest and we have begun to see the rewards.

What has been your strength so far?

Great support system from my family and fans.

You started as a gospel artist and now you want to go secular, what is the reason behind that and how do you intend to break even?

LOL! I am not wanting to go secular. I think we have created a division that only seems to exist in the music industry. We have created the Gospel and the Secular industry, we don’t have a gospel banking industry and a secular banking industry, neither do we have a gospel oil and Gas industry and a secular Oil and gas industry. I am in the music industry and my music will always have a message whether it is gospel or inspirational, it will always be positive content to reach people that are both in and outside of the church .

Where were you born and what was growing up like?

I was born in Lagos Nigeria, my secondary school education was between the United states and Lagos and my University education was in the US as well

What are your educational qualifications?

I hold a BSC in Business Administration with a minor in Public Relations and Advertising as well as an MBA degree.

Are you married?
Yes I am happily married to Kemi Odukoya my wife! Been married for over two years now
