Fast rising actor Melvin Oduah is no new name in the entertainment world. His journey to stardom commenced after he represented Nigeria at Big Brother Africa competition and today, he ranks among the popular celebrities rocking showbiz. An actor, model ,presenter, Melvin who hails from Oshimili South Local Government, Asaba, Delta is one of the new sensations rocking Nollywood. In an interview with City People Head of Movie Desk, VIVIAN ONUORAH, he speaks on his acting career and more.
How and when did you start acting?
I have been acting since when I was a kid. But I started acting professionally in 2009. I started as a model. As a model, you get to act when doing some TV commercials. Then I went into acting as well. My first major appearance in acting was a sitcom called HAPPY FAMILY. I won an award for my role in that movie.
What inspired you into acting?
I have always loved it. I always wanted to be a professional Actor.
How long have you been in the industry?
It’s been cool. It has its ups and downs just like every other thing in life. But generally, it’s been good. About 80 percent of the movies I have done are not out yet. But I have done quite a lot. History Box, Don’t cry for me, Nostalgia, Itoro, Triangle, Warri Blood, Queen Aziza and many others.
How did you get your first role in a movie?
My first major role in a movie was a movie called True Citizens. A movie by Diamond Groove Productions and directed by Elvis Chucks. I had worked with Diamond Groove before and they liked my performance and decided to call me back for their next project. The movie included the likes of Uti Nwachukwu, Bryan Okwara, Alex Ekubo, kenneth Okolie, Alex Osifo, Clara and some other wonderful Actors.
Which of the movies got you more recognition?
As my career in acting blossomed, I got more and more recognition. So I can’t really pencil my recognition to one movie.
what are some of the challenges you have encountered?
My Acting experience has been wonderful.
But At some point, it becomes quite hectic and you barely have time for yourself. But in the long run, your passion for it just keeps you going.
Why did you go into acting?
Like I said before, I have always had a passion for acting. And what more can one ask for than to get paid for something you enjoy doing.
Asides acting, what else do you do?
I model, present, Do guest/celebrity appearances and Compere/Host events.
How rewarding has it been, financially?
The reward has been good enough. Could be better though, But yeah, I’d say it’s been good enough.
Who are some of your best Nollywood acts?
Olu Jacobs, Pete Edochie, Majid Micheal, Ramsey Noah, Desmond Elliot, Genevieve Nnaji and a couple of others
What kind of roles appeal to you more and which has been the most challenging?
I love versatility in my career. I love new challenges in my character for different movies. So I’ve had various challenges.
What is your educational background?
My primary education was in Tomobid school Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos. My secondary education was in Lagos state model college kankon, Badagry, Lagos state. I got my first university degree in university of port Harcourt where I obtained a Bsc in Pure and industrial chemistry. Then I did post graduate in Business Administration in Lagos State University.
What was growing up like?
Growing up for me was very satisfactory. I have my folks to thank for that.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not acting?
-Having fun with friends and family.
How do you cope with female fans or admirers?
I cope quite well.
Are you in a relationship?
No, I’m single
What has been your most embarrassing moment as an actor?
When I had a HARD-ON on set. And it was so visible.
What do you enjoy most about your profession?
The fact that people look up to you. People are inspired by you. It’s a good feeling
Can you marry an actress?
Sure. Why not? You never know where you’ll find love.
What are qualities that you attracted to in a woman?
Her curves. I love a woman with nice definitions.
Who are the stars you are close to and enjoy working with?
Uti Nwachukwu and Beverly Osu. I’m so free with these ones. They are like siblings to me. Working with them is so easy and so much fun.
Do you have role models in Nollywood?
Yeah! Olu Jacobs, Pete Edochie, Genevieve Nnaji
Have you won any award so far?
I won TAVA Award for my role in Happy family. Then I have won a couple of fashion and modelling awards.
How do you feel about your nomination as Best supporting actor?
-I feel honoured. It’s a wonderful feeling. It’s good to know that City People Entertainment recognises my efforts.
